Like we pageant girls couldn’t achieve all our success and create such an impact without YOUR attention, Free The Children is intertwined with over sixty corporate sponsors that extend the success and power of their vision. To name a few there is Oprah’s Angel Network, Me To We, MTV, Google, this Miss Teen Canada World Pageant, and a less familiar name… Club Penguin! I’m sure I don’t need to go into detail for many of the names listed above. Oh! How about that Pageant thing? What’s that all about? I think I have an idea… ;) Well to tell you the truth I had never heard about Club Penguin until working on this blog. That just shows you the power of something as simple as a pageant blog and the importance of communication. Club Penguin is a popular, well developed visual world for children! Completely safe, it targets those who can really make a change… the youth! Kids can enjoy another interactive website while helping other children in the world. There you go kids! Try and get your mom to say no to those video games =P Here’s a direct quote… "Club Penguin helped my twins learn computer skills, the value of money and how to decorate their own world. My son also learned the consequences of using a bad word once too! You have a great program and we continue to recommend it to others." - L. Booker, Maitland, FL
I value working with youth and it involves another love of mine…Disney! It has been smartly paired and perfectly targeted and yet has no third-party advertising. Having many awards, and accomplishing global prosperity it has specifically helped youth in Canada with donating over 1,000 toys to children in hospitals, providing a soccer program that keeps kids active and healthy and changing the lives of more that 19, 000 children with leadership workshops. It works to help local children and children all over the world! Way to go! I would love the opportunity to work with something like THAT!
If you had one chance and choice to make a show all of your own what would you do? My dilemma.... See I love acting but I love socially aware shows as well! For example I admire shows like "The Buried Life" on MTV that demonstrates four males completing a list of their biggest dreams, because today may be their last, and helping another person achieve a goal along the way. Then there's vampire diaries a dramatic story about a girl involved in a world that is normally unbearable, only worthwhile for a love. I love interview shows like Oprah, Family Channel's shows like Hannah Montana and Wizards of Waverly Place, dancing shows like So You Think You Can Dance and America's Best Dance Crew. These are all positions I would dream to be involved with. But the show I am drawing from is a show named 1 Girl 5 Gays! The set up is MTV's Aliya Jasmine and 5 homosexual males answering questions about really anything and everything. In my version I would love to have myself and seven other females in the exact set up but talking about teen issues a long the way. It would be called Girl Talk!
Why? Growing up teens are exposed to so many things before they really should be and the style of life compared to that of a child say even twenty years ago has greatly changed. Who can teens look up to? talk to? We would have a website with details of the shows, viewer feedback, issues they want discussed and what they liked, problems they have. In our website there would be links to each girl and an individual blog where teens could talk to specific girls they relate to. Days could be themed, maybe days put up for guys, a male panel, a day on teen suicide, a day on bullying, dealing with divorce and so on. We can tell stories about our first crushes and speak to the girls out their who don't have positive role models or upbringings. Like a live magazine with real girls instead of celebrities. We could spend 5 minutes in each episode talking about celebrity gossip and what our opinion is. It's easy to be naive when you don't educate yourself and expose yourself to others, and the show could help rectify that issue.
I've always dreamt of a magazine made of real people, like the one developed in 13 Going On 30! Morphing it into a show would only enhance the experience =) Specifically I can make a clip reaching out to girls dealing with divorce, as I've been through three and struggling through the teenage years with great family dis-functions. With sponsors like SMOjoe the show could develop a media base, and if enough hype was created we could really change the world! Creating scholarships for girls to get involved with their community because many children can't afford to be involved with extra-curricular activities, that to me is so unfortunate. The things I have learned from my volunteer work and dancing have altered me forever and made me into a pageant winner! Youths potential shouldn't go untapped and they shouldn't have to go silent with no one to talk to. Teen suicide is far to common as well a link to hot lines would be provided on our website.
The greatest thing about a show like this is that its so simple, just talking and communicating, yet so vital! We can relate to a new group of young women every day, help a whole new issue with a whole new session or theme! Even just within the past couple of months I have been exposed to whole new issues. At Quest I have seen the light in special needs children and the challenge of baby-sitting and living with autistic children and young adults, and in a more personal issue my mom unfortunately lost her job suddenly, leaving our family to deal with the repercussions, a devastating blow with the pageant upcoming. But we managed and other kids can too! Personally what really changes my bad day is someone saying "I've been there too and you're not alone!" Because if you can't be a good example you can be a really good warning! I think empathy and humanity has gotten a little lost and for me, I think we are all connected and just need to be understood!
And anybody could sponsor our show, MC college along with Bells & Bows Bridal Centre to give a girl her dream Grad. Or companies that work with female products like Finesse and Goody that understand being a girl and hopefully could get inspired by our show and passionately involved. It would be in a warm environment, always the same room with the same seven girls. A half hour segment to give girls a weekly laugh, cry, understanding or....Whatever! The possibilities are really unlimited!!
Shoutout to my real life sponsors! Aloud who did my amazing extensions! Essence who gave me a discount on cocktail dresses and shoes as well as The Parisian for helping me buy a BEAUTIFUL dress! And gotta love faceinhole.com! Wondering how I made the fake magazine cover? That's it =)
Calgary, Alberta, Canada! Although I, myself was born in Edmonton I much prefer the warm Chinooks and Stampede fun offered by Calgary! Which I’ve lived in for the past 3 years! I thought a video would be the best way to show these places up close and enjoyed by real people =)
For quick knowledge of Calgary I can tell you that it is the largest city in Alberta and 5th largest city in all of Canada! It has 7,500 hectares of open space, perfect for relaxing. I’ve noticed as a city its weather is better than Edmonton but if it isn’t going so well, no worries, the weather in Calgary changes A LOT in a glance! So if you’re coming by, dress in layers! And in reality, don’t get you winter tires changed until mid-spring ;)
As you can see Calgary is represented by those who enjoy cowboy boots and hats, but the picture to the left also resembles the breeze of Chinook winds and shape of our saddle dome and mountains. I didn’t even realize that! It's a little optical illusion!
Because I live in the southwest area of Calgary that’s really what I know the best! My best friends and I spend lots of time hanging out there and I portraiyed my life here in the video above!
So what are these amazing places and classic symbols? Well…
In the first few pictures….Hello, Calgary tower! If you want to enjoy a dinner with a great view take a look at our own elevated tower =) I’ve yet to visit but I have always wanted to go, It is a classic symbol of Calgary. As well as the mountains and our STAMPEDE! But I’ll go into that later on…Gotta mention the FLAMES, Calgarians are very enthusiastic about their own hockey team =D
In my own personal addition the first and last songs played are by Michael Bernard Fitzgerald! I love his music and guess what? He's born in calgary! Just shows you the potential we all have!
The Calgary Zoo! I love this place, It’s a great place to go with family on a sunny day. There’s tons of room to walk and see all the animals, my favorite….the hippos! But you MUST leave after they eat because if their tail starts waving really fast, they’re gonna blow….and all over you. The rock wall beside the tank isn’t really just covered in rocks… Also! Zoo lights, when winter rolls around they put up a wonderful collection of lights to make your own winter wonderland to walk through, so beautiful!
Calaway Park! It isn’t much but it’s a fun place when you can’t be at stampede and mini-golf just isn’t enough. The rollercoaster is short but sweet, a perfect place for those who like rides but in small proportions!
TUBBY DOG! A MUST VISIT! It was featured on MTV as a go to place for ALL of Calgary! Featured with vintage game machines, posters and tv shows always flashing on the walls, this is a place with great character! The hot dogs? Amazing! Packed with the strangest of combinations, I warn you, it’s a messy eat but delicious! Just off of 17th ave.
PETER’S DRIVE IN! If you can’t already tell me and my friends love food! This place is classic, a good old drive through with monstrous burgers and fries, you think a small is, well, small…NO WAY! The onion rings my friend and I bought were only a size small! The large is a full box! Milkshakes are a must as well. Over all, you’d really be missing out if you didn’t take a stroll by =)
CACTUS CLUB CAFÉ! My work =) A restaurant famous in British Columbia, but not as well known as it’s descending across the province. It’s evolved to a casual fine dining restaurant, with great staff and a delicious menu! In fact Canada’s only Iron Chef Rob Feenie is incorporated with the menu and has featured meals only for Cactus! Working with the Ocean Wise program in Vancouver and keeping it organic Cactus is a restaurant that has more than corporate values! With two locations in Calgary you have double the opportunity to experience the restaurant that has been voted in the best places for employment, Canada style ;)
CROSS IRON MILLS, still in production, just outside of Calgary but it is soon to be the largest mall in all of Canada, larger than West Edmonton Mall!! It has amazing, large stores so you really get to shop!
The other places aren’t so well known but as you can tell in the video, are worth mentioning and help the Calgarian life! We have… Pfanntastic Pannenkoek Haus (fantastic pancake house)- Dutch dining! Sounds different but don’t judge a book by its cover, its seriously delicious! Cabin Café- A great place to grab a bite if you’re on bow trail. Where me and my friends love to have lunch and sit and talk for HOURS. HOT YOGA ON 17th- AMAZING! A beautiful experience if you love yoga, you will obsess over this place. It’s cute and perfect! Lloyds- The roller rink that’s got some good years, but still makes you boogie on down all night. Put on some skates and hold on!! Pho Huong Viet Noodle House- My favourite Vietnamese place in all of Calgary! Super fast and their deep fried banana desert is a risk worth taking!
STAMPEDE- The best of the best! Where you can spend a good two weeks enjoying Calgary culture, watch chuck wagon races, see a hilarious hypnotist over and over, go on great rides! It is such a treat that comes only once a year and is my absolute FAVORITE! I’m devastated that I can only go to it once this year…but I get to be with the Miss Teen Canada World Pageant in TORONTO! July 11-18th and I think I can make the exception ;)
For all the details and extra videos that will be flying your way follow my Blog!!! The best way to communicate with me and see the adventure that is the Miss Teen Canada World Pageant =D Thanks to all those who have supported me and opened themselves to let me make dreams come true!
I’M ALIVE! It has been WAY too long! Spring break went by, as did the month of April and I have been SUPER BUSY!! I got a new job at the Cactus Club Café and its wonderful , finished my last 4 competitions, preparing for my end of the year recital and doing lots of community work!
My mom is unfortunately sick so she’s was in and out of the hospital =[ But on the bright side I got a amazing lady to do my hair extensions named Aloud, from Minks hair salon, and I got my dress for grad/pageant from Parisian and I am about to go pick it up from lovely Esterina who altered it for me…It’s a Jovani! I love them!! I also found some LOVELY dresses from a store in stephen avenue mall called Essence, if you have a chance check it out! They have beautiful dresses and gave me a discount without me even asking (they didn’t even know I was Miss Teen Alberta either!). I’ve been meeting lots of people and trying to get involved in the community with volunteering, getting in touch with radio stations, youthink magazine and much more. So far I’ve had a couple great events! I got to do a walk for water with Aveda hair institute. Me and my friend Taylor went door to door and got an amazing 150 dollars in spare change…the bucket was really heavy! I also helped out at an Aveda event before the walk, they were doing things throughout the month and me and a couple pageant girls went through the mall talking to people and attracting them to the event, we raised 500 dollars collectively that day! I also did some modeling for a sears gala with some pageant girls and we all got together in Panoka for a relay 4 life! There are many photos on the Miss Teen Canada fan page…. http://www.facebook.com/MissTeenCanadaWorld?v=wall&so=45 here you can see what everybody’s up to =] If you have the time PLEASE try a relay for life http://www.cancer.ca/canada-wide/how%20you%20can%20help/cw-relay%20for%2... they’re very well run! And really help a great cause! My long time family friend Sheila was hit with devastating breast cancer, we need to do all we can to find a cure!
My grad is coming up on the 28th!!! I am so excited! I can’t believe it and I’m trying to take deep breaths and not pressure myself with the paranoia of being an ADULT! I’m struggling with school, but that’s okay! Everything is going to work out =)
I just finished writing my own add on the Miss Teen Canada World website that has been newly updated!!! Here are the finalists so far http://mtcw2010.innoveghtive.com/this_year/contestants and HERE is my add http://mtcw2010.innoveghtive.com/this_year/contestant_detail/226 =)! I unfortunately don’t have any proffesional photos yet but I’m looking around and cannot wait to get some done! Really everything that involves this pageant is just SO exciting, that’s part of why I love it so much, it has been a truly wonderful experience. Anyways I’m going to be keeping up more! But that’s all for today =]
So I am a little disappointed that I haven’t been able to do more appearances and work on branching out/using my title but I have been very preoccupied with school! I go to Bishop Carroll and don’t get me wrong, there’s no where else I’d rather be but with the April deadlines, I best be getting this but in gear! Procrastination can be a fault of mine and school is getting less and less interesting. It is important, YES, and I do appreciate learning but the pressure is a little overwhelming. I’m a 75 or more student and I find my strengths are face to face rather test to face. If that makes sense… my mom says that “either way this time is going to pass, but what do you want at the end of it” and it’s so true, no matter what we do these moments will go by, so why not make something out of them? Three little years to ensure the future. Well I really hope to go into communications or broadcasting… sending out that positive energy, c’mon universe ;]
My first appearance with my title was nothing small though, I got to be on local television live!! Breakfast television to be exact with the lovely Susanne Fox! LIVE, gah I trip once a day so how I made it through that interview without terribly embarrassing myself I don’t know but PHEWPH, I also had NO clue what Susanne was going to ask me! She was very natural and nice making my interview that much easier. I wish my sisters could have been there but my moms assistants came for support and were the great photographers…thanks guys =D Everyone at BT was great, got some nice little tips like to always have my mic closest to the person I will be talking to and they even made my mom a great cup of coffee. I like mine star bucks style so I had some water haha. I would sincerely like to thank the team involved at both Breakfast Television and the Miss Teen Alberta World pageant for giving me that opportunity and experience. I loved being there and learning. I love that stuff…one of wonky future ideas and possible hopes is to work on TV at MTV! I have a silly little list with things like ridding in a hot air balloon and learning sign language. Lists are a thing with me…
I also got to go and greet a family friend Marty Drage for his 50th birthday! I got to read him a comedic poem and surprise him with a trip to Vegas! Lucky guy…I wish lol. UPDATE: Marty made it back intact and left me a funny card, david and goliath bag and pink and green chocolate poker tokens! Thank you so much Marty I was happy to be a birthday surprise!
Just finished watching some you tube videos of Siera Bearchell and looking at some fellow title holders. Casual creeping, no big deal haha! But it is seriously getting me so amped up and excited!!!! Wow I love this! Check out her amazing blog at http://www.missteencanadaworld.com/meet_mtcw/blog ! And my goodness these girls are stunning. I've been looking at them on http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Toronto-ON/MISS-TEEN-CANADA-WORLD-PAGEANT/33289240294?ref=ts BECOME A FAN! Then you can see any updates that I may be included in the same time I do. Show your support please! I can’t imagine what’s in store for me or what they are like in person! Pile of nerves right here! Pictures are within range, still new to the blogging so forgive how amateur I am. Both blogs were rewritten twice, I somehow managed to delete my whole blog just as I finished or suddenly leave the blog site, oh and my internet gave out…demon computer! The solution? Microsoft word, write, copy, paste, done deal! I'm gonna keep watching the videos posted on the Miss Teen Canada World pageant website... http://www.missteencanadaworld.com/media/mediaclippings , check it out!
TTFN, Tawney
P.S. I tried to make a cool "layout" that would include a picture which I could overlap text with but it wouldn't register the spaces inbetween my paragraphs or the links i posted =[ So I had to remake it! Do they have a crash course on this for dumbies? =P
Miss Teen Alberta 2010 here! How weird is that?! It was just one month ago my teacher Lisa Harrigan proposed the idea of entering this pageant and here I am! Originally the words pageant bring to mind what? Miss Congeniality, Toddlers and Tiaras, things related to looks and the superficial, world peace and yadda yadda yadda. Insulting to those who put so much heart into pageants like Michelle Weswaldi does for Miss Teen Canada World. There is a misconception that girls are in pageants for the idea of being a title holder, the idea of being the most beautiful and the most special but in reality we are in Miss Teen Canada World for the responsibility. The ability to be accountable and DO something! Being a title holder doesn’t mean you are the most beautiful, it means you have the most potential as a leader. In my opinion at least, but I do know it doesn’t value generic girls with nothing to say. Otherwise they could just have the same person as Miss Teen Canada year after year. Instead, a new girl holds the title with the ability to represent a whole new group of people each year, one that the previous title holder may not have related to as easily. We each have our own kind of beautiful and this pageant has pushed me to be more self aware and just go for it!
I would recommend trying a pageant to any girl! There is a dance, but it doesn’t effect your score, they’re just looking for stage presence, just ask my friend Danielle with two left feet <3 She and I are going to Toronto together. And there is the dreaded bathing suit segment! I do understand the comments of it being degrading, because your ability to wear a bikini shouldn’t reflect who you are as a leader. But the ability to be comfortable in your own body and be confident even in a new, intimidating situation does. Some people are nudist, some people don’t even like shorts. There are many opinions, so I’ll just keep to my own =] I see it as a learning experience!
The interview was great, it all was, we were all well prepared by Shawn Cuffie our choreographer! (take a look at the awesome team at http://www.missteencanadaworld.com/about/team). I chose a platform of extra-curricular activities, seemingly plain but important to me. It’s important for kids to have something they’re passionate about and are responsible to. Something that helps them see a bigger picture and teaches them good ethics! I’ve experienced my parents being my enemies and I don’t know who I would be if I didn’t have dance and if I never joined the legacy group (a small group started by kids who wanted to leave a legacy behind). If I never pushed myself to take a Rapport Leadership Teen Breakthrough course or if I didn’t join girls group and talk about things that face our teenage years. I am so thankful that the adults around me decided to support and develop these things.
None the less, Picking a platform is difficult because my energy wants to go into many different things, Siera Bearchell, the current Miss Teen Canada World, is going to be going to Kenya to build a school, although I have raised enough money with the legacy fund (from the legacy group) to build a school (look into it at http://www.legacyfund.tk/) actually being there and seeing it happen would have been amazing, that is one of my future goals. But I think talking about STD’s is really important as well as animal abuse. So I do hope to raise awareness to more important issues, but my platform felt right and really “hit close to home” as they say. I recommend choosing something you are connected to. It would be cool to join an organization that creates safety nets and after school programs for kids.
After day one preparations came the big night, day two of two and everyone got their gowns out and their makeup done. Not going to lie I was really concerned when everyone pulled out beautiful sparkly dresses and I had a dark red dress from my moms closet! Not a confidence booster, but the makeup definitely was! Thanks to Vanessa and her College for making us all look GLAM! I guess everything worked out ;]
I am so proud to be Miss Teen Alberta World 2010 and I can only hope to be as successful in the next step! The Miss Teen Canada World Pageant in Toronto starting July 11th! I admit I had my total cliché moment and cried thanks to my mom. Being here means a lot to both of us =] I’m not sure what else to write but I will for sure have many entries to come!! I had a great time and I know this is only the beginning!!
